Each year, tens of thousands of children are traumatized by physical, sexual, and emotional abusers or by caregivers who neglect them, making child abuse as common as it is shocking. The scars can be deep and long-lasting, affecting not just abused children but society.

There are four primary types of child abuse:

1.physical abuse

2.sexual abuse

3.emotional abuse

4.neglect

Whether an abuse is rooted in the perpetrator’s mental illness, substance abuse, or inability to cope, the psychological result for each abused child is often the same: deep emotional scars and a feeling of worthlessness.

Our group is focusing on children with physical and/or emotional abuse.

Physical Abuse

Physical child abuse is an adult’s physical act of aggression directed at a child that causes injury, even if the adult didn’t intend to injure the child.

Such acts of aggression includes:

  • striking a child with the hand, fist, or foot or with an object;

  • burning the child with a hot object;

  • shaking, pushing, or throwing a child;

  • pinching or biting the child;

  • pulling a child by the hair;

  • cutting off a child’s air.

Such acts of physical aggression account for between 15 and 20 percent of documented child abuse cases each year.

Many physically abusive parents and caregivers insist that their actions are simply forms of discipline, ways to make children learn to behave. But there’s a big difference between giving an unmanageable child a swat on the backside and twisting the child’s arm until it breaks.

Physically abusive parents have issues of anger, excessive need for control, or immaturity that make them unable or unwilling to see their level of aggression as inappropriate.

Sometimes the very youngest children, even babies not yet born, suffer physical abuse. Because many chemicals pass easily from a pregnant woman’s system to that of a fetus, a mother’s use of drugs or alcohol during pregnancy can cause serious neurological and physiological damage to the unborn child, such as the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome; mothers can also pass on drugs or alcohol in breast milk. A woman who drinks or uses drugs when she knows she’s pregnant can be charged with child abuse in many jurisdictions if her baby is born with problems because of the substance use.

Emotional Abuse

Emotional child abuse involves behavior that interferes with a child’s mental health or social development. Such abuse can range from verbal insults to acts of terror, and it’s almost always a factor in the other three categories of abuse. While emotional abuse by itself doesn’t involve the infliction of physical pain or inappropriate physical contact, it can have more long-lasting negative psychological effects than either physical abuse or sexual abuse.

Examples of emotional child abuse include:

  • Verbal Abuse

  • Corruption

  • Withholding affection

  • Extreme punishment

Causes of Child Abuse

Not all child abuse is deliberate or intended. Several factors in a person's life may combine to cause them to abuse a child:

  • Stress

  • Lack of nurturing qualities

  • Immaturity

  • Difficulty controlling anger

  • Personal history of being abused

  • Isolation from the family or community

  • Physical or mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety

  • Alcohol or drug abuse

  • Personal problems

No one has been able to predict which of these factors will cause someone to abuse a child. A significant factor is that abuse tends to be intergenerational – those who were abused as children are more likely to repeat the act when they become parents or caretakers. In addition, many forms of child abuse arise from ignorance. Sometimes a cultural tradition leads to abuse. Such beliefs include:
Children are property.
Parents (especially fathers) have the right to control their children in any way they wish.
Children need to be toughened up to face the hardships of life.
Girls need to be genitally mutilated to assure virginity and later marriage.

Emotional Effects of Child Abuse

Just as all types of child abuse have an emotional component, all affect the emotions of the victims. These effects include:

  • Low self-esteem

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Aggressive behavior/anger issues

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Alienation and withdrawal

  • Personality disorders

  • Clinginess, neediness

  • Flashbacks and nightmares

Many adults who were abused as children find it difficult to trust other people, endure physical closeness, and establish intimate relationships.

Behavioral Effects of Child Abuse

Child abuse can play itself out not only in how its victims feel but in what they do years later. Children who suffer abuse have much greater chances of being arrested later as juveniles and as adults. Significant percentages of inmates in U.S. prisons were abused as children. One of every three abused or neglected children will grow up to become an abusive parent.

Other behavioral effects include

  • Problems in school and work

  • Prostitution

  • Teen pregnancy

  • Suicide attempts

  • Criminal or antisocial behavior

  • Alcohol and drug abuse

  • Eating disorders

  • Spousal abuse

1)Why did Leslie die offstage in the movie?
Answer:I feel that the director did not include the scene of how Leslie died so that when the news of Leslie's death is told, the audience will be surprised by the news and will want to know what exactly happened which will 'encourage' them in a way to carry on watching the show hoping to know what exactly happened.

2) (i)Who/What does the Dark Lord represent for Leslie?
Answer:I feel that her Dark Lord is loneliness as on the very day when she moved to her new place, she went to make friends with Jesse although he did not bother about her.Despite his unfriendliness, she continued to stick along with him which made him feel very uncomfortable at the start.

(ii)Who/What does the Dark Lord represent for Jesse?
Answer:I feel that his Dark Lord is not having anyone to pay attention to him as before Leslie appeared in his life,he did not have any friends and being the only boy in his family, his siblings did not bother to understand him and his parents did not spent any time with him which made him felt neglected resulting in him keeping to himself. But all was different when Leslie appeared and spent her free time with him which made him felt uncomfortable and soon,he started to confide in Leslie but he was devastated when he got to know about the news that she had died.

(iii)Who/What does the Dark Lord represent to me?
Answer:I feel that my Dark Lord is the dark side of my father-when he beats me.The first time he beat me was when i was 6 or 7.His beating left me bleeding both physically and emotionally.Since then,i never dared to anger him as i'm afraid he would beat me again.

3)Do you prefer the movie or the novel? Why?
Answer:I prefer the novel as it goes into every small little detail which tells me of what the characters are thinking, what he/she intends to do and many other things.Besides, the novel allows me to imagine of the story's settings which really makes it more interesting for me and allows my imagination to run wild.

1)Why did Leslie die offstage in the movie?
Answer:In my opinion, i feel that Leslie died offstage as the director wanted to end the movie in a more way, reducing the production costs of the movie. It allows us to imagine what exactly happened.

2) (i)Who/What does the Dark Lord represent to Leslie?
Answer:In my opinion,Janice Avery is her Dark Lord as Janice is a bully where she had been bullying kids smaller size then her since young. On the first day of school,Leslie sat on Janice's place in the bus which made Janice very angry with her. Therefore,Leslie is afraid that Janice will bear a grudge towards her and pick on her.

(ii)Who/What does the Dark Lord represent to Jesse?
Answer:In my opinion, her sisters are his Dark Lord as being the only boy in his family, his sisters always pick on him and they may even stop from eating with the excuse that he stinks which makes me pity Jesse as it isn't a good feeling to get bullied.

(iii)In my opinion, darkness is my Dark Lord as since young,i've always been afraid of the dark as it gives me an eerie feeling which never fails to send shivers down my spine.Till now, each night before i fall asleep,i will switch on the lamp situated beside my bed and every night after i sleep,my parents will come in to off the lamp so as to save electricity.

3)Personally,i prefer the movie compared to the novel as it is more detailed and it helps to show what exactly happened in the story which in my opinion,it's better for me as i can have a better understanding of the story compared to reading the novel as there are some things in the novel which i don't understand and watching the movie has helped to clear my understandings.

PART C

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.
The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors.
The sacrifice to the ancestors, the most vital of all the rituals, united the living members with those who had passed away. Departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they were responsible for laying the foundations for the fortune and glory of the family.
The presence of the ancestors is acknowledged on New Year's Eve with a dinner arranged for them at the family banquet table. The spirits of the ancestors, together with the living, celebrate the onset of the New Year as one great community. The communal feast called "surrounding the stove" or weilu. It symbolizes family unity and honors the past and present generations.

Christmas

Christmas is celebrated annually on every 25th December.Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. The specific date of celebration is believed to have been influenced by the dats of pre-Christian festival. The word Christmas originated as a contraction of "Christ's Mass". It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038, compounded from Old English derivatives of the Greek christos and the Latin missa.

This festival is celebrated mostly by the Christians and the western people which also include the Eurasians and Americans. However, throughout the years, many non-Christians are also celebrating this festival. In this modern world,it is a custom for gift giving, church celebrations, and the display of various decorations. One major aspect for Christmas is the jolly mythological figure Santa Claus (Father Christmas) which never fails to put a smile on the people's faces. We believe that people of all ages love this annual holiday as much as we do as it's the last festival of the year which keeps everyone in a festive mood and children have the fortune of receiving whereas the adults have the joy of giving. It is also this period when Christians gather together and celebrate the birth of christ.

PART B

Comparison to how I celebrate Chinese New Year to how Jess celebrate Christmas.

The way Jess celebrates Christmas is very different to how I celebrate Chinese New Year. Firstly, from the book 'Bridge to the Terabithia', people exchange gifts or give gifts including children while Chinese New Year, the married adults can only give red packets. The Chinese will have spring cleaning on the eve of Chinese New Year and decorate their house. Jess's family not only do not clean their house, the atmosphere and attitude towards the coming Christmas is not there. During the eve of Chinese New Year, the children had to stay up in the midnight as the traditional people believes that the later the children stay, their parents will have longer life. Christmas do not believe this. They will all sleep soundly, waiting for the Santa Claus to give out presents. From the information I got from the book, Jess celebrates his festival, Christmas with Leslie instead of his family. Chinese New Year is the day where everybody gathers around and chit-chat. They will also use the chance to get closer and reunion. When Jess opens up their presents, there is and arguement between his sisters of what kind of presents they get. I find that they should be contented with what they get and not grumble. One should be satisfied with what they get. Like Chinese New Year, the children should be satisfied with how much the red packets contain and not grumble like nobody's business. At least, it's better than having nothing.

[Part A]

Every year, our Chinese will celebrate one important festival that is Chinese New Year. During Chinese New Year, our parents or uncle and aunty will give us money put inside a red packet, which we called “Hongbao”. Chinese new year have celebrate 15 days ,one day before Chinese new year are very important, the dinner during that night must whole family gather together to eat, it is important to everyone. [Part A]

I still remember my family and i celebrating Christmas together as it was a fun-filled day and it was one of the festivals where my parents could really take out some time from their busy schedule to spent time with me as they are very busy people who very seldom can find the time to accompany me.

It was also a festival that left a deep impression on me as my parents had told me that they could not spent time with me on Christmas as they will be on a business trip abroad. Therefore, when they reached home in the afternoon on Christmas Eve,i was on cloud nine because with them accompanying me,it won't be another lonely Christmas!

Besides making the effort to reach home before Christmas,my parents each bought a present for me from abroad which make me felt like the happiest girl on earth. For dinner,my parents brought me to an Italian restaurant to eat.I can still remember that the Italian restaurant was very crowded and it was very well decorated.

On the way home,i told my parents how happy i was for the time and effort they had put in to spend Christmas with me.hearing what i had said,my parents promised to try their best to spent more time with me.That Promise they made really mean a lot to me even to this day.

After reaching home,we had a mini-countdown for Christmas where after that i opened my presents and without a doubt, the presents from my parents were the most precious to me.

After this day,my parents always make the effort to try and spent time with me on weekends and through the days, our relationship became stronger and i really appreciate the effort they had put in to spend more time with me.

I feel that family relationships is very important as without them,we'll feel very lose at certain point of our lifes and we have no one to rely on.They are the ones who will spent time and stand by us through our ups and downs in life.
